A 12-year-old Pittsburgh girl was killed after her first date when her father’s car knocked her down and dragged her body 50 feet down a sloped street on Sunday.
Shamera Harris went to the movies at Waterworks Mall with a 14-year-old boy earlier that evening. Her mother and father picked them up after the movie and took the boy to his home in Stanton Heights. When they stopped, Shamera’s mother told the young friends to take a photograph together. Her father, Richard Benton, who was drunk at the time, fumbled with the gear shift to park the car and got out to help.
However, the brake was not engaged and the Ford Explorer rolled down the street. Shamera, who had been standing at the back of the vehicle, was struck down. The Explorer dragged her to the opposite side of the street–a distance of about 50 feet– where came to a stop after hitting a tree.
Shamera’s mother, who had been in the car, tried to revive her daughter with CPR, but was unsuccessful. The girl died on the scene.
Benton, 53, initially refused to take a breathalyzer test when the police arrived, but was later booked on one misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence. An investigation has been launched to determine why the SUV backed down the street and Benton could face additional charges, should he be found responsible for the young girl’s death.
